you know, i have a couple of aging hipster friends who saw the pixies live the first time around and insist that they were one of the most boring live bands they ever saw.not to suddenly devalue your $47 ticket, or anything. i’m curious if there are others out there with similar or contrary views. i would also add that i really like the pixies, if i didn’t think it would devalue my $47 worth of indie cred in the eyes of certain other crankyrants readers.

Wait, I saw the Pixies the first time round. Am I an aging hipster? Oh crap! Anyway, the show I saw back in 1991 was reviewed as a mediocre one, but I really enjoyed it and thought it was amazing. And this time round it doesn’t actually matter whether or not it’s a ‘good’ show. They’re the Pixies. Just basking in their brilliance as part of my music trinity will be enough. The other two members are the Fall and Talking Heads. It would be great if they would all play together, but it would probably make my head explode. - lukakapookie says:
I saw them the first time ’round as well. Amazing music, zero stage presence. And this wasn’t at a large venue, so it’s not like I was half a stadium away or something.I tried to get tickets to one of the gazillion shows they played here in January, but the tickets were untouchable without going through a scalper/agent. You’d *think* that being in NYC is an advantage for seeing good concerts, but I’m finding that just the opposite is true. There’s so many damn music industry people in this town that most of the time, concert tickets don’t even get sold to the public. Except for shows at the Garden, but I barely ever want to see any of those anyway. Grrr.

I saw them in the same room at my university where we sat our exams. A big room for exams, but a very small room for the Pixies c. 1991. They had to stop the show because the stage was collapsing, or something, and the crowd was shouted out for behaving badly (though not by any of the Pixies themselves). Anyway, I think all of this led to the mediocre reviews, but I thought it was one of the most glorious moments of my life. Especially as my friends in England had to see them at Wembley Stadium. - georg says:
i saw the Pixies first time around and i thought it was a damn fine show. stage presence? wtf-ever… even back in the back then they were a buncha schlubby lookin’ white folks. but they tore the roof of the place. (”the place” btw was CBGB so i call trumps on all other aging hipster readers of this here blog) - Fikri says:
I, too, shelled out that ridiculous sum for one ticket. That was, like, 6 shows worth of money. I doubt I will get 6 times the joy of a regular show, but I gritted my teeth and did it anyway. On account of it’s the Pixies.Indy cred be damned. I have no guilty pleasures, only shameless ones.

Luckily I almost never go and see live music (because, you know, the music kids today like sounds like noise to me). This means I have a) no indy cred to worry about, and b) have only spent the cost of six shows I wouldn’t have attended anyway. So you see, there is an up-side to being boring.
